I recommend you do use Tornado as a vehicle for learning python. It takes barely any code to get a working application up and running and would be a great start.

I’m a PHP programmer, and a python noob. I’m very interested in Tornado, and have an application in mind for high volume traffic, and it’s a simple idea I have. Would I be wish to switch from PHP before I begin, dive into learning Python and Tornado at the same time?

If so, where should I start, knowing absolutely nothing about Python?

I can recommend runit as daemonization tools. You don't need to write pid managment stuff, it is dead easy to make standalone program daemonizable. Basically just write a 'run' file which contains instructions to start your program, and that's it.

You can write:

pid = int(open(path).read().strip())

as:

pid = int(open(path).read())

Nobody needs to “check out” init with friends. What's required is knowledge about how Tornado tells us it wants to shut down, and under what circumstances it wants signals of different kinds.

Oh, I misunderstood. Check out daemontools, upstart, runit, or supervisord.
